Application
Bachelor of Arts in Medical Journalism and Public Relations (BA)
As a fundamental rule, students must fulfil the admission requirements in line with Section 63 of the Austrian Universities Act (Universitätsgesetz – UG 2002), which includes demonstrating possession of either “a general university entrance qualification”, a “European university entrance certificate” or an “equivalent certificate” (e.g. Abitur, International Baccalaureate) pursuant to Section 64 UG 2002.
DPU operates an admission procedure that does not focus on the grade achieved in the university entrance qualification certificate (Reifezeugnis) and instead relies on a “Matura-plus concept”. This procedure aims to identify talented and motivated applicants who can be expected to practise independent academic thinking, who demonstrate an ethical motivation to enter the dental profession, and who are willing and able to undertake training to qualify for the role while developing their imagination and creative vision. We offer equal opportunities to international applicants, e.g. from elsewhere in the EU or around the world, with due regard for statutory requirements and in line with ENIC-NARIC terms and conditions. The admission procedure is an objective, evidence-based, multi-stage process.
Stage 1: Submission of Application Documents
- Preliminary application form
- CV with passport photo
- Personal statement (one side of A4)
- Certified copy of your general university entrance qualification certificate (to confirm that you meet the admission requirements set out in Section 63 of UG 2002)*
- Confirmation that you have completed an eight-week internship in journalism/public relations
* If you have not completed your general university entrance qualification at the time of application, please submit your certificate as soon as possible. In its place, please send a grade transcript from your last academic year together with your application.
Stage 2: Admission Test
Following positive assessment of your application documents, you will be invited to take a written (single-choice) admission test and attend a personal interview (to review your subject-specific, social and communication skills) at DPU.
Stage 3: Results-Based Ranking
At the end of the admission procedure, the programme’s academic directors rank candidates based on their results, who are then admitted in this order.
Master of Arts in Medical Journalism and Public Relations (MA)
We operate an admissions procedure (similar to the procedure for the Bachelor’s programme) for the Master’s programme.
A requirement for admission to the Master’s programme is presentation of a Bachelor’s degree certificate (with an average grade of 2.3 in the German-speaking world – roughly equivalent to a 2:2 in the UK or a B– in the USA) from a relevant consecutive undergraduate degree programme in communications/medicine/journalism with a focus on medicine/health/biology, or a relevant and recognised university degree.
Other requirements for admission to this Master’s programme include successful completion of relevant studies in the life sciences (i.e. medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biology, biochemistry or public health) with evidence of basic skills in journalism and/or communications and public relations arising from relevant practical experience.
These undergraduate studies (e.g. Bachelor’s programme) must have had a standard study period of at least six semesters and been equivalent to at least 180 ECTS credits.
The admission procedure comprises three stages:
Stage 1: Submission of application documents
- Preliminary application form
- CV with passport photo
- Personal statement (one side of A4)
- Certified copy of your general university entrance qualification certificate (to confirm that the applicant meets the admission requirements set out in Section 63 of UG 2002)
- Certified copy of the transcript/certificate from your Bachelor’s degree or equivalent undergraduate studies
Stage 2: Admission Test
Following positive assessment of your application documents, you will be invited to take a written (single-choice) admission test and attend a personal interview (to review your subject-specific, social and communication skills) at DPU.
Stage 3: Results-Based Ranking
At the end of the admission procedure, the programme’s academic directors draw up a results-based ranking, with applicants admitted in that order.
