Course Structure and Curriculum

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Arts in Dental Hygiene programme lasts three years, including exams, and is divided into six semesters, comprising a total of 180 ECTS credits. The place of study is the Danube Private University in Krems, Austria and its training facilities. The DPU and its teaching practices possess all the necessary practicum, laboratory, phantom, dental clinic facilities, in which the clinical practicums on patients are conducted.

The Bachelor of Arts in Dental Hygiene (BA) programme is divided into three stages of study, each of which lasts two semesters.

1st and 2nd Semester: Theoretical Training

The theoretical stage of study for the acquisition of the prescribed dental and scientific competencies.

The objective is to acquire specialist knowledge in the professional field of dental hygiene/prevention, as well as subject and profession overlapping topics. Students thereby acquire and apply the knowledge required for the mastery of exemplary situations and also learn to transfer it to more challenging and complex situations.

3rd and 4th Semester: Pre-Clinical and Clinical Training

The pre-clinical and clinical stage of study for the acquisition and practice of the prescribed competencies in the field of dental hygiene. The pre-clinical and clinical training addresses theories, care and treatment concepts, problems and situations, as well as case studies. The acquired knowledge is immediately applied in practical work. The focus is on the independent transfer to individual patient situations, whereby the clinical complexity gradually increases.

The pre-clinical training also enhances skills and the necessary assuredness in the safe use of the instruments in order to exclude any harm to the patients or students. The DPU has a sufficient number of state-of-the-art phantom units, including a master unit (for the professor), and digital streaming options, at its disposal for this purpose.

During the clinical training, the students treat patients as dental assistants under professional instruction, guidance and direct supervision, and in accordance with a compulsory catalogue of components. The students are instructed in effective, efficient and cost-conscious treatment methods.

5th and 6th Semester: Final Practicum

The final year of study consists of three components:

1. Final practicum in one of the teaching practices
2. Project work
3. Exam

The practicum serves to intensify and expand the prescribed competencies in the field of dental hygiene.

During the final practicum, the students consolidate and expand their knowledge and skills as dental assistants to develop the competencies that they have acquired. The DPU organizes supplementary courses and in-depth modules in the form of tutorials in order to reflect on theoretical and practical issues from the dental practice (teaching dental practice) and to develop joint proposals for solutions. The aim of the final practicum is the secure mastery of the dental hygienist’s daily work in accordance the stipulated time and conceptual requirements.
